MGLS President's Message

This is my chance to thank you, the members of the Minerals and Geotechnical Logging Society, for giving me the opportunity to preside as President for the coming term. I also wish to welcome other members to the board, including Don Hill as First Vice President, a brand new board member, John Lane as Second VP, and Secretary Treasurer, Fred Paillet, who has previously held all of the board positions at least once and has volunteered to multiply his personal contribution of time and effort by also being symposium chairman.

We have a new executive board, amended Bylaws, and best of all, a Seventh International Symposium on Borehole Geophysics scheduled for this coming October! I hope all of you have gotten the "Call For Papers" by either email or regular mail. I got a few "addressee unknown" returns both from my emailing and also from the regular mail. Please keep us informed of your current address, both email and regular mailing address. We are using the internet as much as we can to deliver news and announcements, both to speed the information to you and to save on postage and unnecessary use of paper products. Our web site can be our Hub, available for not only the executive board but all members to publish news, announcements, and links to company sites. Just email the webmaster. Thanks for a great voter turnout.

It is my hope that together we can stir up some of the enthusiasm once held by our founders as we move into the year 2000; a Y2K celebration, not a Y2K crisis. As you see below, we will have the "Seventh International Symposium on Logging for Minerals and Geotechnical Applications" in Golden, Colorado, in October! I hope you feel as excited about this as I do. I have really missed having the opportunity to attend an exclusively MGLS symposium since our most recent meeting in 1995. Please consider submitting a paper or at least joining us in Colorado this coming Fall.

In my capacity of Bylaws Chair (1997-1999 term) I'm also announcing the results of our Bylaws election (see announcement later in this issue).

SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON LOGGING
FOR MINERALS AND GEOTECHNICAL APPLICATIONS
GOLDEN, COLORADO - OCTOBER, 2000

ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

The Minerals and Geotechnical Logging Society Chapter of the SPWLA, and the U. S. Geological Survey announce plans for an MGLS Symposium to be held in Golden, Colorado, October 24-26, 2000. The symposium will consist of two full days of sessions on all aspects of geophysical logging applied to ground-water, mining, engineering and other non-petroleum geotechnical studies. Depending upon the actual submission of abstracts, sessions are planned for (but not limited to) the following topics:

Aquifer characterization and geological exploration

Applications in mining and mine construction

Geophysical characterization of minerals and lithology

Geotechnical applications in engineering and construction

New logging equipment and data analysis techniques

Contaminant migration studies at Superfund sites

Integration of data from surface, cross-borehole, and conventional geophysical logs

Symposium proceedings will be published so as to be available at the time of the meeting. Brief abstracts are requested by either regular mail or email to allow the Symposium Committee to identify sessions and publish a preliminary agenda. Presentation at the meeting requires submission of both abstract and final camera-ready manuscript for the Proceedings volume. Papers can be presented in either oral or poster form. There will be a 10-page limit for camera-ready manuscripts. Special arrangements are being made to accommodate U. S. Geological Survey authors to expedite the manuscript approval process.

Announcement of Bylaws election results

As Bylaws chairman for the recent amendments referendum it was my official duty to collect and count the recent ballots on the amendments. Here are the results:

A total of 42 sealed ballots with valid signatures from current MGLS (and SPWLA) members were received, with the following votes:
